Dual Fuel Range Cooker With 13amp Plug
Are you a cook at home who appreciates the nimble cooking control of gas cooktops but wants an electric oven to bake? Find a dual-fuel range cooker that gives you the best of both worlds.
Gas cooktops are preferred by many home chefs who have experience in the kitchen due to their superior temperature control. They also allow them to use advanced cooking techniques, such as grilling. These powerful stoves are expensive particularly if they need an additional gas connection and an electrician for installation.
What is a 13amp plug?
If duel fuel range cookers have a dual-fuel range cooker (also called a gas and an electric oven), you will need a 13 amp plug. The plug also needs to be hard-wired into the cooker circuit using a competent electrician.
This ensures the current flowing through the plug will not exceed the safe limit which could cause an electrical fire. The current is controlled by a fuse inside the plug. The fuse blows whenever the current passes through it beyond its capacity. This protects the appliance from an over-charge of electricity.
The fuse is classified at 13 amps, as indicated on the top of the plug and this is the maximum amount of current that the plug can carry without causing damage to the appliance or overheating the socket. When replacing fuses, it's important to select the same amperage rating that was used in the original. If you replace the fuse with one that has a different rating, then you risk overheating the socket and possibly putting you and others at serious risk.
Ceramic 13 amp fuse are extremely robust and can withstand the high temperatures that can be generated by a range cooker. Ceramic elements are also fire-resistant, and thus a better choice over other types.

There are a variety of ways to install the 13 amp plug. The plug can be connected to a live socket by using screws or a plastic jaw cord clamp. The clamp on the cord should be tightened after the plug is tightly pushed into place.
Some plugs may have a diagram of wiring on cardboard over the pins, and these must be removed prior to connecting the wires. The wires must be trimmed to the right length, as when they are too long they may be crushed when the plug covers are replaced. The earth wire must be the longest one to ensure that it is connected prior to the line and neutral pins.
How do I fit the 13amp plug?
The vast majority dual cookers that use fuel in the UK are powered by a 13 amp plug. This is important because ovens can draw substantial current, while normal plug sockets have a 10 amp rating.
Generally speaking new appliances should be fitted with plugs at the time of sale. This is all part of complying with the Plugs and Sockets etc (Safety) Regulations 1994. However, older appliances may not have the plug, and this is where the problem arises.
The first thing to do when connecting a cooktop to an existing plug socket is to make sure that the rating of the fuse in the fuse box is in line with that of the plug. This is very important because a fuse that is not properly sized could be dangerous.
It is also advisable to ensure that the fuse is installed within the cartridge and that there is no excessive movement within it. The next step is to prepare the flex to be used. Remove the sheathing from the flex to expose the three conductors that are insulated within. Use a utility blade to cut the sheathing beyond the grip on the cord at the entry point of the plug. This won't penetrate the insulated conductors. The nick should be large enough to allow the sheathing to split and enlarge the nick as it is pulled back, revealing the cable underneath. Cut off the excess sheathing leaving about 40mm beyond the flex.
The flex is then positioned over the plug and the earth terminal is placed at the top and the neutral and live terminals at the bottom. The sheathing on each pin is removed using colored conductors as a reference. The internal cable is then fixed into the terminal using the cord grip. If the plug is fitted with a screw-type cord clamp, loosen this and then pull back the insulation to reveal the copper conductors. Connect each wire insulated to the appropriate terminal by using the channel in the plug. Begin with the earth conductor first, then the neutral and finally the live.
What is the maximum draw of a 13 amp plug?
The maximum current draw for 13amp plugs at 230volts is 3kw. This is a large amount of power, but the standard fuse that comes with the UK plug will not fail until the cable is at a risky temperature. It is essential to be aware of the power you are using in your kitchen as a faulty plug or socket can lead to a fire.
The fuses in plugtops are ceramic, approximately 25mm in length and 240V mains rated. The fuses will bear the BS Kitemark or similar mark on the side, and they'll contain sand. There are glass or plastic alternatives, but they shouldn't be used with a live plug or else you could cause a fire and get electrocuted!
The majority of dual fuel range cookers sold in the UK require a hard-wired connection and cannot be plugged directly into the wall socket. They are typically connected to a dedicated cooker ring circuit which is only suitable for appliances that draw up to 20 amps.
You can verify the ring circuit at your home by examining the fuse box, or by speaking to an electrician in your area. They will be able tell you whether the sockets in your home are connected to the same ring, or if they are separate and if there is a dedicated circuit for your oven.

What is the maximum current draw of the cooker switch?
There is a lot confusion about the maximum current draw of the cooker switch. The fact is, most cookers are not designed to plug into an ordinary socket, but instead are wired hard and connected to a specific oven ring circuit. It is because they often consume more than 20 amps when both the gas hob and electric oven are in use.
Therefore, you will not find a dual range cooker with a fuel source that can be fitted to a standard socket because it could pose a serious fire risk and would be against electrical regulations. A licensed electrician must always install new electrics in the kitchen, connecting them to the cooker. duel fuel range cookers will also ensure that the load of the oven and hob do not exceed the circuit's supply capacity.
The advantages of a dual fuel cooker are the responsive cooking power of a gas stove and the precise operation of an electric oven. They are therefore a favorite among chefs as well as home cooks. If you are looking to experiment with various cooking techniques like searing and charcoaling, a dual fuel range cooker is the perfect choice.
When you are looking to purchase a new range cooktop, you need to consider several factors that include size, performance and price. In addition, you will be required to ensure that your house has the right gas hook-up for the appliance.
